Smooth newts in the historical fountains of Rome

We have investigated a surprisingly large population of smooth newts (Lissotriton vulgaris meridionalis) in the historic pools and fountains of the Botanical Garden of Rome, an exceptional discovery in an urban setting. This study represents a unique case in Rome of scientific research and conservation conducted in artificial environments of historical and cultural value. The historic fountains and pools thus emerge as true refuges for biodiversity in the heart of the city.

Great crested newt conservation in the area of Rome

The Italian crested newt (Triturus carnifex), a species protected by the Habitats Directive (Annex II), is now almost extinct in the metropolitan area of Rome, with only 3-4 isolated populations still present. The study and protection of these relict populations is therefore crucial to ensure their long-term survival. Their conservation is a priority at local and national level.
